Business Development Officer – Truro/Colchester Region


The Truro and Colchester Partnership for Economic Prosperity (TCPEP) is looking for a driven multi-talented person to fill a dynamic and evolving role. As Business Development Officer you will support various business development activities in the Truro and Colchester Region. The central role is to connect with local business owners/managers, understand their challenges, and provide valuable navigation and support services. This is a challenging and fast-paced work environment.


Strategic Thinking & Leadership

  • Be involved and familiar with the community and the people who contribute to it.

  • Analyze problems and seek out innovative solutions.

  • Facilitate meetings, gather input, and data with the knowledge to use that information to extrapolate a viable business plan.

  • Possess a positive, optimistic attitude.

  • Give advice to the CEO and contracted service providers.

  • nalyze and condense information in a logical way to provide clear and concise guidance.



  • Prepare well thought out proposals and make recommendations.

  • Have research skills.

  • Network with communities, economic development professionals and a wide variety of other organizations.

  • Speak in front of groups, facilitate meetings and translate outcomes into action items

  • Work effectively with community leaders, diverse community groups, and all levels of government.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) activities within the Colchester Region.

  • Direct support to businesses, helping them navigate businesses services to support their growth and expansion.

  • Assist in the economic data collection and update the economic/business development sections of municipal websites with the information collected.

  • Assist partner organizations in presenting workshops, business educational programs and information sessions in the Colchester Region.

  • Advance specific economic development priorities.

  • Respond to requests for information to the municipalities by various means including telephone, electronic, website, and social media or in person from various stakeholders including real estate agents, municipal partners, provincial agencies or the general public.

  • Build a comprehensive business database.

  • Assist in the regional Investment Readiness Process.

  • Use BRE Tools to assess business opportunities and issues.


Skills & Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge of local business support services as well as knowledge of local and regional economic development opportunities.

  • Minimum of three (5) years of experience in the business or economic development field.

  • Requires a university or college degree/diploma in a related discipline (Planning, Business, Political Science, Engineering or Economics).

  • Strong presentation and analytical skills.

  • Valid Driver’s License and current driving abstract.

  • Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) Training would be considered an asset.

  • A Certificate, Diploma or Designation (Ec.Dev) in Economic Development considered an asset.


Working Conditions

The Business Development Officer will work in both an office environment and in the field and will work a standard work week. Flexibility in working hours is required as some work will happen outside the standard work week. Travel throughout the regional will be required.




A competitive salary/contract will be offered based on qualifications and experience. The position/contract will be for a 2-year term (with possible renewal).
